Better Speech & Hearing Month 2023

Want to Participate in Better Hearing and Speech Month 2023? Here’s How

Each year, Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) takes place to raise awareness for disorders that impact communication, like hearing loss. It also spreads the word about the technology and healthcare advancements that exist to help those with communication disorders.

The theme for Better Hearing and Speech Month 2023 is “Building a Strong Foundation.” Hearing is an important part of the foundation for your ability to communicate with the outside world. It allows you to connect with your loved ones, experience joyful sounds like birds chirping and waves crashing, and it keeps you out of danger. By participating in BHSM, you can not only protect your ability to hear sounds like these, but you can also support the one in seven Americans who experience hearing loss.

Follow these tips to be an active part of Better Hearing and Speech Month!

1. Protect Your Hearing

Better Hearing and Speech Month is a great opportunity to refresh yourself on the measures you should be taking to protect your hearing throughout the entire year. For example, you may want to turn down the volume of your television or music listening device. You should also avoid sticking objects like cotton swabs in your ears as these can cause damage.

2. Evaluate Your Current Ability to Hear

Whether you believe you have been experiencing hearing loss or not, knowing how you hear currently can establish a baseline that can be helpful in the future. Visit a local hearing care provider for a test to determine if you could be helped by a hearing aid.

3. Spread the Word

Hearing loss is an often-misunderstood condition. Many think that only the elderly or those in certain occupations are impacted, but all ages, genders, races, and occupations can experience hearing loss. If someone you know is experiencing hearing loss, they may not speak up about it for fear of being judged or treated differently. The sooner they accept their hearing loss and seek help, the better chance they have at improving their quality of life. You can encourage your loved ones to seek help by letting them know they are not alone, that you support their journey.

When you participate in Better Hearing and Speech Month, not only do you gain the knowledge and practices that can keep you hearing better for longer, but you may just be leading someone you know to getting the help they need.
