Why Slight Hearing Loss Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Hearing loss is common enough that some of us may joke about losing our ability as we age, but hearing problems in California are more serious than you might think. While it’s natural that our faculties decline over time, even mild hearing loss can impact you at home, work and with friends. Here’s how:

  • It affects your mental and physical health: Hearing loss can lead to a 30 to 40 percent reduction in cognitive abilities, as well as increasing anxiety and depression, brain shrinkage and even tripping and falling. In fact, elderly people with hearing loss are three times more likely to fall—which can be fatal—than their counterparts with excellent hearing. If you notice the signs of hearing loss, get it addressed as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that your brain will be permanently affected. Hearing aids actually reduce the risk of cognitive decline, and improve your balance.
  • It affects your career: People with untreated hearing loss are twice as likely to be unemployed, and for those who have jobs, you might be losing out on as much as $30,000 of income per year. Hearing loss affects your ability to communicate with others, which is important for any job—but especially for people who work directly with clients and the public. If you can’t hear your clients, you can’t address their needs. Luckily, when you treat your hearing loss and use hearing aids, you can avoid 90 to 100 percent of the income decline.
  • It affects your social life: If you’ve ever begged off a get-together in a noisy environment because you know you won’t be able to hear well, you’re already experiencing effects on your social life and relationships. Untreated hearing problems in California are a major cause of social isolation—many people feel embarrassed that they can’t hear, don’t get the jokes and aren’t aware when someone is talking to them in a crowded room. Not only is it uncomfortable for you, but it can lead to miscommunications between friends and loved ones. Hearing aids can help you isolate conversations in noisy areas as well as simply amplify your friends’ voices.
  • It affects your personal safety: Many of our safety instincts rely on the ability to hear—for example, being able to hear surprise oncoming traffic can alert you to get out of the way, while smoke alarms let you know when you’re in fire danger. When you have even slight hearing loss, your personal safety is directly impacted. Similarly, if you have or care for young children, their safety is endangered, too.
