We go through life eating the foods that appeal to us, oftentimes conjuring up nostalgia by making meals from childhood. By now, you’re aware of the benefits of eating a well-balanced diet and how it’s good for your health, especially your bones, muscles, brain and heart. The foods we choose to put into our bodies can be motivated by the desire to lose weight or to get hormones back on track, but have you ever considered the connection between nutrition and the auditory system?

The link between diet and hearing

This reduces the amount of bad fats in your body and pushes you in the direction of more healthful food choices. When you reduce the amount of cholesterol in your diet, your mental wellbeing benefits and your body can start to heal.
Studies published in professional journals (Ear, Nose and Throat and the International Tinnitus Journal) investigated the effects of a low-cholesterol diet in individuals with tinnitus. Tinnitus is a hearing issue characterized by a ringing or noise in the ears. Both studies reported significant improvement of tinnitus symptoms after participants reduced the amount of cholesterol in their diets. And over an eight-year period, researchers discover that a healthy balanced diet did indeed benefit hearing. The heart, blood circulation and other system functions also showed improvement.
Beneficial vitamins and minerals
The discomforts associated with tinnitus and other hearing issues can be reduced by consuming a heart-healthy diet, but there is no proof that it can prevent hearing impairments. Make sure to get your ears checked on a regular basis, and maintain a balanced diet to include the right vitamins and minerals for better hearing:
- Vitamin A: This immune booster can be found in many fruits and vegetables, especially plain pumpkin.
- Vitamin B: Folate helps support the nervous system and vascular health, both of which optimize hearing health. Get a healthy dose of vitamin B from natural sources like beans, lentils, lettuce and spinach.
- Vitamin C: Antioxidants help with cellular health of the inner ear. Eat oranges, kiwi, bell peppers, guava and others.
- Minerals: There are four key minerals that should be in your diet to boost your hearing health: folic acid, magnesium, potassium and zinc. Consult with a nutritionist to ensure you’re getting all the minerals you need from your diet.
