While hearing loss is something that can occur suddenly, more often than not it is a gradual process and you may not even notice it at first. As in most health situations, catching something before it gets too bad will always be in your favor, and being aware of the early signs of hearing loss will help you recognize the problem early on.
It is in your best interest if you feel like your hearing is weakening to pay attention to your body and see if it shows any sign of hearing loss. In doing so you can look to start treatment right away which will have a much more profound effect as opposed to waiting too long and the treatment potentially not working at all.
Signs of Hearing Loss
There are many different signs of hearing loss in Monterey that can be discovered early on, but there are a five that tend to be the more common signs that your hearing is decreasing and they are listed below:
1. Difficulty hearing and misunderstanding what people say. When sitting in a room with people, do you find it difficult to make out what they’re saying? Or are you misunderstanding what they are saying? Depending on the situation, this could be an early sign of hearing loss.
Obviously if you’re at a concert or in a crowded bar, it’d be difficult for anyone to hear anything; however, if you are at home or at a restaurant and you are finding it difficult to understand the conversation going on around you, that could be a definite sign of hearing loss.
2. Asking people to repeat themselves. This one goes hand-in-hand with the above point. If you find yourself asking someone to repeat what they are saying more than you usually would, there’s potential for hearing loss.
3. High music and television volumes. If you’re watching TV or listening to music, are you constantly turning it up higher and higher? If you need your music or television volumes higher than everyone else it can definitely mean hearing loss in Monterey.
4. Difficulty hearing the telephone or doorbell. Normally, you should be able to hear your telephone or doorbell from any regular room in your house. If not, a loss of hearing could be setting in.
5. Regularly feeling tired or stressed. If you find yourself getting headaches more often or feeling more tired after a conversation, it could be because you are having to concentrate closely while listening to everyone talking so you can hear everything.
How to look after your hearing
The ear is an incredibly fragile structure and although it is sometimes impossible to prevent hearing loss, there are ways you can work on slowing down the process and preserving some of the hearing:
1. Use ear protection when working in a noisy environment. Not sure when ear plugs are necessary? You should use ear plugs when it’s too loud to hold a regular speaking-volume conversation.
2. Wear earplugs to loud concerts or nightclubs. Although this may not be your ideal way of protecting your ears, it is certainly effective.
3. Avoid sticking fingers, cotton swabs or tissue into your ears. Nothing belongs in your ears, but when you are looking to clean them out, gently take a cotton swab and work it just around the outer portion of the ear. This can avoid puncturing your ear drum and causing permanent damage.
When all is said and done, it is nearly impossible to avoid some loss of hearing over your lifetime; however, getting your hearing checked regularly can bring to light these symptoms early on and prevent them from getting worse.
